Our Origin Story

“Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.”

It all began with a nagging thought that constantly rang like a clock tower bell in my mind. “How can I merge what I love (people) with what I enjoy doing (communications)?”

I didn’t have the answers for a long time, but some clues eventually led me to create Society Bulders. This ongoing thread of experiences showed me two important things: People view my work in communications as valuable and black culture/people lights a fire in my soul. I constantly found myself donating my time to help the world reshape its perception of a group that was often viewed as a monolith— as if we weren’t multi-dimensional and with various experiences. Thanks to my upbringing, I have seen the best of many cultures. I had a privilege that many (no matter their background) may never obtain—seeing the world and people in its true vibrancy and spectrum of life.

From working at a humble-yet-impactful non-profit to sitting at the table with corporate leaders, there’s always been an opportunity to expand our minds about the communities that make up our society.

In 2019, I began to lay the foundation of Society Builders. The incremental steps to get here were small and sometimes delayed due to fear and uncertainty. Today, Society Builders is not only a catalyst in multicultural creative spaces, but a reminder of my life work—to do my part in building our society’s understanding of people through my God-given talents.
